How to Flush a Faucet Valve

Purpose

Flushing the faucet valves (the valve body/housing) removes debris, mineral buildup, old lubricant, and sediment that can damage or shorten the life of new cartridges.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Turn off the water supply
Locate the angle stops under the sink for both hot and cold lines. Turn them fully clockwise. If no angle stops, shut off the main water supply.
  2. Open the faucet handle(s) to relieve pressure
Turn the faucet on (both hot and cold) to drain remaining water and confirm shut-off.
  3. Remove the old cartridge(s)
Follow the manufacturer’s procedure (remove handle, bonnet nut, clip/pin, then pull cartridge).
  4. Plug the sink drain
Use a rag or stopper to prevent losing small parts.
  5. Protect the faucet and sink finish (optional but recommended)
Cover the area with a towel.
  6. Flush the hot side first
Place a bucket or rag over the valve opening, slowly open the hot angle stop, run water forcefully for 30–60 seconds until clear, then close.
  7. Flush the cold side
Repeat the same process for the cold side.
  8. Flush both sides simultaneously (recommended for single-handle faucets)
Briefly open both stops together for 10–15 seconds, then close.
  9. Inspect the valve body
Use a flashlight and remove any remaining debris with pliers or a brush.
  10. Dry the valve body
Wipe out excess water and debris with a clean rag.
  11. Install the new cartridge(s)
Proceed with installation (grease O-rings if needed, align, secure).
  12. Turn water back on slowly
Open angle stops gradually and check for leaks.
  13. Test the faucet
Operate the handle and verify smooth operation with no leaks.
