Troubleshooting Cartridge Problems
Low Water Pressure
Issue: The water flow from the faucet is weaker than usual.
Remedy:
- Check the Aerator: Remove the aerator at the end of the faucet spout and clean any debris or mineral build-up.
- Inspect the Cartridge: Shut off the water supply, remove the handle, and extract the cartridge. Clean or replace the cartridge if clogged.
- Flush the Lines: Turn on the water supply without the cartridge installed to flush out any debris in the lines.
- Reassemble: Reinstall the cartridge and handle, then test the water pressure.
Dripping Faucet
Issue: The faucet continues to drip even when turned off.
Remedy:
- Identify the Source: Determine if the drip is coming from the spout or the base of the faucet.
- Replace the Cartridge: Shut off the water supply, remove the handle and the faulty cartridge, and replace it with a new one. Ensure the new cartridge matches the old one.
- Check O-Rings: Inspect and replace any worn-out O-rings or seals.
- Reassemble: Reinstall the handle and turn on the water supply to check for leaks.
Difficulty in Turning the Handle
Issue: The faucet handle is hard to turn or is stuck.
Remedy:
- Lubricate the Cartridge: Shut off the water supply, remove the handle, and extract the cartridge. Apply a plumber’s grease to the cartridge stem.
- Clean the Cartridge: If lubrication doesn’t help, soak the cartridge in vinegar or a lime remover to clean mineral deposits.
- Replace if Necessary: If the handle is still difficult to turn, replace the cartridge.
- Reassemble: Reinstall the cartridge and handle, then test the handle for smooth operation.
No Water Flow
Issue: No water comes out when the faucet is turned on.
Remedy:
- Check the Water Supply: Ensure the water supply valves are fully open.
- Inspect the Cartridge: Remove the handle and cartridge. Check for any obstructions in the cartridge or the faucet body.
- Clean or Replace: Clean any debris from the cartridge or replace it if damaged.
- Flush the System: With the cartridge removed, open the water supply briefly to flush out any debris.
- Reassemble: Reinstall the cartridge and handle, and test the faucet.
Water Temperature Issues
Issue: The water temperature does not adjust correctly.
Remedy:
- Inspect the Cartridge: Some cartridges have a built-in temperature limiter. Check and adjust this setting if necessary.
- Check for Blockages: Remove the cartridge and inspect for any blockages that might be affecting the hot or cold water flow.
- Replace the Cartridge: If temperature issues persist, replace the cartridge.
- Reassemble: Reinstall the cartridge and handle, and test the water temperature adjustment.
Leaking from Handle Base
Issue: Water leaks from the base of the handle.
Remedy:
- Check O-Rings and Seals: Shut off the water supply, remove the handle, and inspect the O-rings and seals on the cartridge.
- Replace if Necessary: Replace any damaged or worn O-rings and seals.
- Check Cartridge Installation: Ensure the cartridge is installed correctly and tightened properly.
- Reassemble: Reinstall the handle and turn on the water supply to check for leaks.
Noisy Faucet
Issue: The faucet makes a noise when turned on.
Remedy:
- Inspect the Cartridge: Remove the handle and cartridge. Check for any signs of wear or damage.
- Replace if Needed: Replace the cartridge if it appears worn or damaged.
- Flush the Lines: With the cartridge removed, flush the lines to remove any trapped air or debris.
- Reassemble: Reinstall the cartridge and handle, and test for noise.
